Shang Wu Primary School (5 March 2013)


Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (Cina) Shang Wu (GPS: 5.40831, 100.2998; Traditional Chinese: 商務小學, Simplified Chinese: 商务小学), known formerly as Shang Wu Primary School, is a Chinese national type primary school in Air Itam, Penang. It occupies a piece of land bordered by Jalan Air Itam and Jalan Sekolah La Salle.

Shang Wu Primary School traces its roots to the early 20th century. It began as a trade school offering evening classes to adult students on business management. In the early days, it was located in Gelugor. In response to needs, it started classes for school-going students from 1912. Initially classes were held in the morning, but due to demand, by 1938 after sessions were also started. Its student intake continued to increase gradually until 1941, when Japanese invasion forced the closure of the school.

With the withdrawal of Japanese occupational forces in 1945, Shang Wu School resumed its morning and afternoon sessions. By then its student population has reached five hundred people. That was when Shang Wu sought to become a government-aided primary school, to better provide for the school operations as well as for funding teachers' training and salary.

Shang Wu School saw a sharp decline in its student population in the 1950s. This is because many of its students whose families who are goldsmiths moved to Butterworth, where the then Free Port status was more conducive to the gold trade. To survive, the school decided to relocate.

After considering several options, Shang Wu School accepted an offer from the La Salle Christian Brothers to occupy the land of the former La Salle School. The school building was completed at the end of 1970, and Shang Wu Primary School began operating at its present location along Jalan Air Itam from 1971.
