Sightseeing with Bus 103: Airport-Tanjung Bungah

Rapid Penang Bus 103 is ideal for Sightseeing the northern coast of Penang Island. The route starts in the heart of George Town and ends in Tanjung Bungah, on the northern part of the island. Along the way, Route 103 passes through the Pulau Tikus neighbourhood and the famous beaches of Tanjung Bungah. The bus passes through some of the beach hotels in Tanjung Bungah, but does not go all the way to Batu Ferringhi.

Rapid Penang Route 103 Sightseeing Itinerary

Your sightseeing tour with the Rapid Penang 103 starts at the Weld Quay Ferry & Bus Terminal.

As the bus starts to move, look to your left. You will see the clan jetties.

The first junction is at Chulia Street Ghaut (Gat Lebuh Chulia). The bus turns right and go up Chulia Street Ghaut. Then it turns right again, at Victoria Street (Lebuh Victoria). Look out for Yeoh Kongsi, a small clan temple, on your left, at the junction.

At the end of Victoria Street, the bus turns right and go down China Street Ghaut (Gat Lebuh China). It reaches the junction with Weld Quay (Pengkalan Weld) once more. Here it turns left and go up Weld Quay. Look to your right to see Swettenham Pier.

The bus passes through the roundabout at King Edward's Place (Pesara King Edward). See the Queen Victoria Memorial Clocktower followed by Fort Cornwallis on your right, and the State Assembly Building on your left. Next, you see Padang Kota Lama parade field on your right, followed by the stately City Hall and Town Hall.

The bus next turns left and go down Pitt Street. Look for the Penang Supreme Court building on your right. The bus makes a right turn into Farquhar Street. Turn to your left to see the St George's Anglican Church. You might want to disembark here if you wish to visit the Penang State Museum, a short distance after the church. Other sights here includes the Church of the Assumption, St Xavier's Institution and Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion.

As the bus turns left into Penang Road, look to your right to see Segara Ninda, a Malay heritage house turned budget hotel. Penang Road and adjacent Campbell Street were the main shopping streets of George Town in the 1970's, though today it is a little past its prime. Look out for Central Police Headquarters complex to your right. If you want to taste the best cendol in Penang, get off the bus here, and walk up to Keng Kwee Street.

The bus turns left and go down Prangin Road. Look to your right to see Komtar. The bus now turns right and go along Jalan Ria and enters Komtar. Here the bus makes a stop at the Komtar Bus Terminal. It then emerges on the other side of the mammoth complex at Magazine Road.

The bus turns right at Magazine Circus (which is not a roundabout anymore) and enters Penang Road again. Look to your left for Ong Kongsi, another clan temple.

The bus next turns left to Burmah Road. Now it goes along Burmah Road. Watch out of Kuan Yin See, the temple busiest during the Nine Emperor Gods Festival, on your right.

At the intersection with Anson Road, you can see Wesley Methodist Church on your right, followed by the Seventh Day Adventist Church and Burmah Road Gospel Hall, all major churches in Penang.

At the Pangkor Road (Jalan Pangkor) junction, the bus turns right. Look for Gleneagles Medical Centre on your right and Sri Pangkor Condominium on your left.

At the end of Pangkor Road the bus turns left to enter Kelawei Road (Jalan Kelawei). On the right side are skyscrapers, mostly luxurious condominiums. Further down the road, look to your left to see Dhammikarama Burmese Temple and Wat Chaiyamangkalaram (the famous Temple of the Reclining Buddha) on either sides of Burmah Lane. Farther down, look for Gurney Plaza on your right.

At the Bagan Jermal traffic lights, the bus goes straight and enter Jalan Tanjong Tokong. The road is lined with upmarket condominiums. You can see Island Plaza shopping mall on your right. The bus now continues its journey along the northern coast.

At Chee Seng Garden, the bus turns left to Jalan Chan Chee Seng. The route ends at Jalan Chan Siew Teong. Here the bus makes a U-turn to return to George Town.
