The Penang bureau of Sin Chew Daily (27 January 2012)
Sin Chew Daily (GPS: 5.41592, 100.32396) is one of the main Chinese-language newspapers in Malaysia. Its Penang bureau is located in Macalister Road, George Town. The newspaper is owned by Sin Chew Media Group, the parent company to
Guang Ming Daily.
The history of Sin Chew Daily goes back to 1929, when it was established by the Tiger Balm magnate Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par in Singapore. Even after the separation of Singapore from Malaysia, Sin Chew Daily continued to be based in Singapore until the early 1980s, when the Malaysian government moved to restrain foreign ownership of local dailies, compelling the Aw family to sell off ownership of their Malaysian operations to Lim Kheng Kim in 1982.

On 27 October 1987, Sin Chew Daily was adversely affected by Operasi Lalang, a government clampdown that saw its publication licence suspended. It was only lifted on 8 April, 1988. An increase in circulation made Sin Chew Daily the best selling Chinese-language newspaper in Malaysia in the early 1990s, overtaking its main rival Nanyang Siang Pau.
