Sin Nam Huat Beach StreetSin Nam Huat Beach Street (9 December 2015)

Sin Nam Huat Beach Street (GPS: 5.41652, 100.34097) is a new closed down outlets of Sin Nam Huat Roast Chicken & Duck Rice in Penang. It is a franchise of the original Sin Nam Huat which operates in Paya Terubong. As Sin Nam Huat is my wife's favourite chicken rice, we decided to give it a try.

Tim's Taste Test

9 December, 2015: The coffee shop was quite small with only a few tables downstairs. So it does up its upper floor for additional tables. We climbed the stairs and found a table there. The upstairs was empty and we were the first to take a table.

Ordering at this Sin Nam Huat is the same as at other Sin Nam Huat outlets. The person who took our order was friendly. In addition to giving our order, we got into a conversation with him. We learn that this, like other Sin Nam Huat, are franchise holders. They get their chicken from the supplier put prepare the rice in situ. I also found out that, at the time of our visit, there is already 13 Sin Nam Huat outlets in Penang. What a surprise. I have only been to a handful and I thought that was plenty.

After our order taker went downstairs, an Indian guy came up and brought us our drinks. And then we waited. And then we waited some more. Strangely our chicken did not materialize. Should we check on our order? I decided we will wait a bit more.

Finally, after about 20 minutes, our chicken and rice we brought to us on a tray by the Indian waiter. He apologized that there has been a confusion downstairs and instead of bringing us our meal, it was packed up to go. That gives us a poor impression on the order taker. Friendly though he was, he did not get our order right. After all, the upstairs was empty when the order was taken.

We order our "usual" at Sin Nam Huat, which is, two chicken meals, two eggs and salted vegetable soup. In addition, we were also given a cabbage soup on the house. The meal was very salty, more salty that at other Sin Nam Huat. My wife also commented that the rice was less "springy" and aromatic compared to Sin Nam Huat elsewhere. That's a pity. Maybe we got them on an "off" day.

This Sin Nam Huat happens to be at a part of town that we don't visit that often. So, we are unlikely to return to this outlet any time soon. The mix-up on our order, and the saltiness of the meal, unfortunately did not entice us to make a repeat visit soon. We might try it once more time in the future, to see if it could redeem itself.

Updates on Sin Nam Huat Beach Street

25 January, 2016: Just a month after I ate at Sin Nam Huat Beach Street, I passed by to see that the shop is gone. There is a "to let" sign posted on the front door. I do not know whether the business at this franchise has closed down or relocated.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
