Sin Yin Nam Cafe, New Lane, George Town, Penang (22 May 2011)

Sin Yin Nam Cafe (GPS: 5.41492, 100.32638) is the coffee shop at the junction of New Lane and Macalister Road in George Town, Penang. It is one of several coffee shops along New Lane that turns the whole place into a massive hawker food centre. Sin Yin Nam Cafe is one of the oldest coffee shops along New Lane and has been operating there for several decades. Today the hawker stalls spill onto both sides of New Lane.

One thing I am not too impressed about Sin Yin Nam Cafe is that it is one of the first coffee shops to charge patrons for not ordering any drinks. Although I always order drinks, I still feel that it is a bit much of the coffee shop to do this, even though I fully understand that as a small business operator, it needs to meet its overheads.

One thing I do like at Sin Yin Nam Cafe is the Hokkien Mee here, which I call the New Lane Hokkien Pai Kut Lor Mee.

Tim's Taste Test

28 July, 2014: We returned to Sin Yin Nam cafe which we have just visited two days earlier. Since we were here so recently, this time we decided not to have the Hokkien Mee, but opted for the Lor Bak.

Unlike the Hokkien Mee, we were less impressed with the lor bak. First of all, the lor bak disintegrated after it was sliced. In my wife's opinion, that means a failure. As she often makes lor bak at home, she expects to see the lor bak to hold its shape after it is sliced into pieces. Secondly, the beancurd was not sliced all the way through, but stuck together at the bottom. To me, that's small matter, but my wife regards that as another failure. The prawn fritters were also "wanting".

My wife thought that the chicken rice stall seems to be doing quite good business, so we decided to order chicken rice as well. After tasting it, we say that the chicken rice is only passable - something to eat for want of anything better. I know we sound quite particular about our food. Of course, most of the things "can makanlah" but if you want me to praise it, it has to be outstanding.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
