Balmoral Road, Singapore (2 August 2017)
Balmoral Road is a residential road in
Singapore. It is between
Tanglin on the west side and
Newton on the east. Balmoral Road runs from the intersection with
Bukit Timah Road,
Dunearn Road and Chancery Lane in the northeast to the intersection with
Stevens Road and
Anderson Road in the southwest. It also branches to Balmoral Crescent.
According to
Singapore Street Names1, Balmoral Road was originally called Almeida Road. It is one of three roads in Singapore named after the family of José de Almeida (1812-1894), the other two being D'Almeida Street off
Raffles Place and Almeida Street in
Chinatown off
South Bridge Road. An incident in 1908, where the fire brigade was confused over which Almeida Street led to this road being named after Balmoral, the residence of British monarchs in Scotland since Queen Victoria.
It is believed that the name Balmoral was chosen because Dr. H.T. Wee, who inherited the land in the area from his father Wee Teck Seng, was partial to the name Balmoral because he studied in Aberdeen, Scotland.
