Boon Tat Street, Singapore (1 August 2017)
Boon Tat Street is a minor street in downtown Singapore. It is located within the
Downtown Core and
Outram planning areas. The street extends from
Amoy Street in the west to
Shenton Way in the east. It intersects with
Telok Ayer Street,
Cecil Street and
Robinson Road, and forms junctions with
Stanley Street and
Boon Tat Link.
Boon Tat Street was originally known as Japan Street. Following the defeat of the Japanese in the Second World War, It was renamed in 1946 after local businessman and Municipal Commissioner, Ong Boon Tat (1888-1941), who runs the New World amusement park along
Jalan Besar. Boon Tat's father Ong Sam Leong was also honoured with a street name,
Sam Leong Road. Boon Tat Street was traditionally known in Hokkien as Mah1 Cor1 Keong3 Phi1 媽祖宮邊
, literally, "Beside the Mazu Temple," in reference to nearby
Thian Hock Keng Temple.
How to reach Boon Tat Street
Take the
North-South Line or the
East-West Line of the Singapore MRT to the
Raffles Place MRT Station. Walk south down Robinson Road or Cecil Street until you reach the intersection with Boon Tat Street.
