Canning Rise, Singapore (30 July 2017)
Canning Rise is a minor road in the
Museum Planning Area of
Singapore. It connects on one end to
Coleman Street. The other end is at the SMU School of Law car park. A pedestrianised portion of
Armenian Street also connects to it.
According to
Singapore Street Names, Canning Rise was named after The Viscount Canning, Charles John Canning (1812-62), who served as the Governor General of India from 1856 to 1862.

Canning Rise is home to several notable landmarks. At 1 Canning Rise stands the National Archives of Singapore, a building that has been meticulously restored to harmoniously blend its historic charm with modern amenities. This restoration has enhanced accessibility and introduced new features, including an expanded Oldham Theatre.
Another prominent institution along this road is the Registry of Marriages (ROM) and the Registry of Muslim Marriages (ROMM), located at 7 Canning Rise. However, starting from 14 April 2025, both registries will temporarily relocate to Esplanade Mall to facilitate the redevelopment of the Canning Rise site, with completion anticipated by 2028.
