According to Singapore Street Names, Canning Rise was named after The Viscount Canning, Charles John Canning (1812-62), who served as the Governor General of India from 1856 to 1862.1
Canning Rise is home to several notable landmarks. At 1 Canning Rise stands the National Archives of Singapore, a building that has been meticulously restored to harmoniously blend its historic charm with modern amenities. This restoration has enhanced accessibility and introduced new features, including an expanded Oldham Theatre.
Another prominent institution along this road is the Registry of Marriages (ROM) and the Registry of Muslim Marriages (ROMM), located at 7 Canning Rise. However, starting from 14 April 2025, both registries will temporarily relocate to Esplanade Mall to facilitate the redevelopment of the Canning Rise site, with completion anticipated by 2028.2
Adjacent to Canning Rise is Fort Canning Park, a historic hilltop park offering a delightful blend of cultural, historical, and natural attractions. Visitors can explore various gardens, historical artifacts, and enjoy panoramic views of the city.3
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
