Cheang Wan Seng Place is a short no-through-road in downtown
Singapore. It is located within the
Raffles Place subzone of the
Downtown Core, within Postal District 01. The road connects on the one end to
Cross Street. It is a service road for the buildings in the area which includes the
Manulife Tower,
IOB Building, TPI Building and ISCA House.
According to
Singapore Street Names1, Cheang Wan Seng Place was named after 19th century tycoon Cheang Hong Lim's (1825-1893) company, Chop Wan Seng. Cheang, whose name Hong Lim lives on in various properties in Singapore, including Hong Lim Complex and Hong Lim Green, established a school here. The road was called in Hokkien as 酒廊邊 (Taiji: Ciu1 Long1 Pni1
; Church Romanisation: chiú-lóng-piⁿ, Taiwanese Romanisation: tsiú-lóng-pinn). According to
What's in the Name2, Cheang Wan Seng Place became a public street in 1901.
