Chesed-El Synagogue (GPS: 1.29737, 103.84268) is one of the two main synagogues in Singapore. Located along Oxley Rise, it was established by Sir Reuben Manasseh Meyer in 1905. The name Chesed-El means "Bounty of God" in Hebrew.

There was a rapid rise in the growth of the Jewish population in Singapore towards the end of the 19th century. The majority are German (Ashkenazim) and Spanish (Sephardim) Jews. They worshipped at Maghain Aboth Synagogue on Waterloo Street, but as their numbers rose to over two thousand, there was severe overcrowding.

To relieve the pressure on Maghain Aboth Synagogue, Meyer bought the land next to his home, Belle Vue, at Oxley Rise, to create a private synagogue, for use by his family and friends. The building, designed in the late Renaissance style by Regent Alfred John Bidwell of the architectural firm of Swan & MacLaren, was an handsome three-storey structure with a carriage porch.

Similar with Maghain Aboth Synagogue, it comprises a prayer hall for men on the ground floor and a women's prayer hall on the second-storey gallery, above the porch. Men enter the synagogue through the main entrance while women through a different entrance.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
