Church of Saints Peter & Paul, Singapore (9 July 2006)
The Church of Saints Peter & Paul (GPS: 1.29762, 103.85155) is a church on Queen Street in the Rochor, Singappore. It has its rear facing Waterloo Street. The church was founded by the Chinese Catholic Mission to serve the Chinese and Indian Catholics in Singapore. It is also the place for Western missionaries to learn Chinese. The history of the Church of Saint Peter and Saint Paul is closely linked to events associated with Saint Joseph's Institution. It was there, at the former site of the St Joseph's Institution, that the Chinese Catholic Community had their first chapel, as early as 1830's.
By the 1840's, the chapel has becoming too small. Instead of enlarging it, a new church building was built. This becomes the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd nearby. The site of the chapel was then turned into Saint Joseph's Institution, which today houses the Singapore Art Museum.
The present building was erected at the end of the 1860's, completed in 1870. It has been enlarged twice, in 1891-1892 and 1911. The church bells were installed by Father Pierre Paris in the 1870s, and they are still in use to this day.
