Crawford Street, Singapore (26 July 2017)
Crawford Street is a major road in downtown
Singapore. It connects
Lavender Street, at the intersection with
Kallang Road in the north, with
Republic Avenue, at the junction with
Beach Road. A bridges carries it across the
Rochor River.
According to
Singapore Street Names1, Crawford Street used to be called Jalan Rochor, based on what is shown in George Coleman's 1836
Map of Singapore. It was renamed after Dr John Crawfurd (1783-1868), who served as the second Resident of Singapore, in his honour after his passing in 1868. An error in recording the name resulted in it being named "Crawford" rather than "Crawfurd".
