Funan (GPS: 1.29154, 103.84992) is a shopping mall in
Singapore. It occupies a city block between
North Bridge Road and
Hill Street, and has entrances on both sides. Funan officially opened to the public in 28 June, 2019, replacing the now demolished Funan DigitaLife Mall. Funan is owned by CapitaLand and managed by CapitaMalls Asia. It has a retail space of 269,806 sqft over 6 floors.
The now demolished
Funan DigitaLife Mall, also called
Funan The IT Mall or simply
Funan Centre, was one of the first major shopping malls in Singapore to be located outside the Orchard Road shopping belt. The mall opened in 1985 and was originally called
Funan Centre. It became one of the two choice malls for electronics and IT-related products, the other being
Sim Lim Square. But while Sim Lim Square caters to the general consumers, Funan DigitaLife Mall positioned itself as being slightly more upscale.
The retail area of Funan DigitaLife Mall covered six levels. It had a total of 178 stores. The anchor tenant was Challenger Superstore, a local brand of IT retailer. Other tenants include Harvey Norman and Cold Storage supermarket.
Due to dwindling business, the mall's owner, CapitaLand decided upon a complete makeover which requires the demolition of the original building, and replacing it with a new shopping mall with a condominium block and two office tower blocks. The original building was demolished in 2016, and the new building opened to business as
Funan in June 2016.
