Gedung Kuning (GPS: 1.30228, 103.86017) is a historic building in Kampong Glam, Singapore. Located near the end of Sultan Gate, it is just next to Istana Kampong Glam. Tengku Mahmud is said to have given it its name Gedung Kuning, which means "Yellow Mansion", based on the colour of its walls. The building is also known as Rumah Bendahara.
Gedung Kuning is believed to have been built around the time or slightly before the 1840 reconstruction of Istana Kampong Glam. The building is said to have been occupied by Tengku Mahmud Putra, the third son of Sultan Ali by Cik Sembuk, in 1864. Tengku Mahmud was groomed to succeed his father, even though the eldest son is Tengku Alam Shah.1.
Gedung Kuning was mortgaged by one of the sons of Sultan Ali to R.M.P.C. Mootiah Chitty in 1907. Then in 1912, a local merchant, Haji Yusoff, bought it from R.M.P.C. Mootiah Chitty. The property was again sold in 1919. It went through a few Chinese owners beginning with Choo Saw San in 1919 and ending with Majoor Oei Tiong Ham, who held it until his death in 1924. It was subsequently bought back by Yusoff's family and was used by the family their private residence for the subsequent four generations.
Today, Gedung Kuning is one of the properties of the Malay Heritage Centre, which also administers Istana Kampong Glam. The building was used for various things, most notably as restaurants under various operators.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
