Shopping is a favourite past time in Singapore (7 July 2011)

Singapore is a shopper's paradise. Since its founding in 1819, it has been acknowledged as the great emporium of Southeast Asia. The settlement began as a trading port, and after independence, grew to become one of the main international commercial centres of the world.
Today shopping is often regarded as the national sport of Singapore. Every housing estate on the island has its own suburban shopping mall so that residents do not have to travel far for their daily necessities. The biggest shopping malls in the city are in the Central Business District, particularly in the Downtown Core and Orchard areas.
