Kampong Kapor Road (26 July 2017)
Kampong Kapor Road is a minor road in the
Little India of
Singapore. It is the road running parallel to
Serangoon Road and
Jalan Besar, and is located in between the two. Traffic on Kampong Kapor Road is one way, flowing from Upper Weld Road to Verdun Road, at the intersection with
Syed Alwi Road. In between, it forms intersections or junctions with Cuff Road,
Chitty Road,
Veerasamy Road,
Hindoo Road,
Baboo Lane,
Rowell Road and
Desker Road.
As would be expected, Kampong Kapor Road takes its name after a certain Kampong Kapor, meaning "lime village", after the lime used for betel chewing.
1. This name is a translation of the village name in Tamil, which was
sunnambu kampam. In other words, Kampong Kapor was a Tamil settlement. But in addition to that, there was also a Malay community composed of settlers who originated from
Pulau Bawean. They called the area Kampong Boyan (Boyan being a linguistic variation for Bawean), and established Abdul Gaffoor Mosque as their place of worship. The Baweanese men took employment as syces and horse trainers at a race course nearby, where
Race Course Road is located today.
