Keong Saik Road, Singapore

Keong Saik Road, SingaporeKeong Saik Road, Singapore (29 July 2017)

Keong Saik Road is a one-way minor road in the Chinatown neighbourhood of Outram, Singapore. For much of its route, Keong Saik Road is lined with eateries, restored shophouses, multi-storey hawker centres and high-rise flats. It starts at New Bridge Road in the north, and ends at Neil Road in the south. Between the intersection of Kreta Ayer Road and Neil Road, it follows the curve of the former railway line, today readapted as Duxton Plain Park.

Keong Saik Road was named after 19th century local tycoon Tan Keong Saik. He is one of the many wealthy Tan clansmen who relocated from Malacca. Keong Saik was a pillar of society during the later part of the 19th century. He served as, among others, the director of Tanjong Pagar Dock, and was appointed a Justice of Peace.

Keong Saik Road was one of the red-light districts of Singapore in the mid 20th century. It has since been gentrified, with the shophouses being turned into bistros or boutique hotels.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
