Little India Arcade (GPS: 1.30567, 103.85200) is a cluster of shophouses which were restored and turned into a bazaar. It is located in the
Little India neighbourhood of
Rochor, Singapore. This is a great place to catch a glimpse of the culture and tradition of Little India. The shophouses that make up Little India Arcade were built in 1913 in the early Art Deco style. Today they house a kaleidoscope of colourful shops selling everything you would expect to get in India itself.
Explore the shops selling exquisite hand embroidered saris. Colourful bangles, trinkets, shawls, all the items you would expect to find in a visit to Mumbai or Delhi, can be discovered in the Little India Arcade. If you care to have your hand decorated by henna, there's a shop here that does that. This is also the place for activities that have died out in other parts of Singapore to still be seen, such as the paan wallah, or beter nut seller. Admire the beautiful flower garlands made with jasmine, ixora and orchids. There is truly an endless variety of things to see, smell and hear at the Little India Arcade.
Snacks and food of various types are plentiful here. Try the
muruku, a savoury Indian cracker, or the many types of Indian candies. If the heat gets to you, escape into one of the many air-conditioned restaurants offering cuisine of South India, North India, Bangladeshi and more.
