Marina Coastal Expressway, Singapore
Marina Coastal Expressway (MCE) is an expressway on the southern part of
Singapore. It connects the
Keppel Viaduct in the west with the Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway, at the interchange with the
East Coast Parkway, in the east. Construction began in 2008. When it was completed at the end of 2013, it became the shortest expressway in the country, with a length of just 5 km (3 mi). However, it is also the most expensive expressway in Singapore, as the total cost is estimated at S$4.1 billion, much more than the S$1.74 billion spent on the
Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway.
The Marina Coastal Expressway is a dual carriageway expressway. It has ten lanes, with five in each direction. 3.5 km (2.2 mi) of the expressway is underground. This includes a 420-meter stretch under the Straits of Singapore, just 150 m from the
Marina Barrage, a particular challenge to engineers due to the high volume and water pressure expected whenever the barrage discharges.
The expressway provides an artery connecting the eastern and western part of Singapore to the New Downtown area being developed south of the present Central Business District. Places accessed include the
Marina South Pier and the proposed Marina Cruise Centre.
