Market Street, Singapore (28 July 2017)
Market Street is a street in the
Downtown Core of Singapore. Present-day Market Street is split into two sections. The northern section of Market Street starts at the junction with
Chulia Street, across from
UOB Plaza, and ends at
Church Street. The southern section of Market Street starts at the junction of
Cecil Street and ends at the junction with
Cross Street.
Although it is a clean, well managed street today, Market Street is one of the oldest streets in Singapore. It has been around since the early part of the 19th century, and is shown in Coleman's 1836
Map of Singapore.
Market Street was named after the old
Telok Ayer Market, which was built at the southern end of the street around 1825. That market was rebuilt in 1836 by George Coleman, and stood there until 1879, when reclamation of the sea off Telok Ayer called for its relocation. It was then moved to the newly reclaimed land between
Raffles Quay and
Robinson Road. That market building is known today as the
Lau Pa Sat, or "Old Market", having been given a new lease of life as a food centre.
