Merdeka Bridge, Singapore

Merdeka Bridge, SingaporeMerdeka Bridge, Singapore (26 July 2017)

Merdeka Bridge (GPS: 1.30438, 103.86858) is a bridge across the Kallang Basin in Singapore, at the mouths of the Kallang River and Rochor River. The bridge takes the Nicoll Highway across the basin. It was designed by the Public Works Department and was officially opened to traffic on 17 August, 1956.

The entrances to the Merdeka Bridge are originally flanked by lions. These were sculptures by Italian Rodolfo Nolli (1888-1963). They were called the Merdeka Lions. However, the lions have since been removed.

The Merdeka Bridge celebrates the self-governance of Singapore, attained from the British in 1955. The country does not attain full independence until 1963. There is also another Merdeka Bridge in Malaysia, across the Muda River between Kedah and Penang.

About this website

Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
