Mohamed Sultan Road is a street in the River Valley Planning Area of Singapore. On the southern end, it meets the junction with Saiboo Street and Martin Road. The road was offically named in 1898 at a time when the northern bank of Singapore River was experiencing some activity spilled over from the bustling harbour.
Today Mohamed Sultan Road is lined with apartments. Among the streets forming junctions with it include Nanson Road, Caseen Street, Kim Yam Road, Tong Watt Road and Unity Street. There are some beautiful three-storey Straits Eclectic townhouses near the junction with River Valley. These have been restored, gentrified, and turned into bistros and restaurants.
According to the 2023 edition of Singapore Street Names1, Mohamed Sultan Road got its name in 1898. The entry was expanded compared to the 2013 edition, but the book was still unable to describe the etymology of the road name, other than to say that there is no official records as to whom the road was named.
According to What's in the Name?, we learn that Mohamed Sultan Road was known in Hokkien as Cui1 Long3 Thau2 水龍頭 which translates as "front of the fire brigade", possibly because there was a fire station along the road.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
