Moongate (GPS: 1.28568, 103.86223) is a sculpture at Gardens by the Bay, Singapore. It is located at the Active Garden at the waterfront promenade, on the south bank of the Singapore River. Standing at a height of 3.8 metres, it was designed by sculptor Chong Fah Cheong, drawing inspiration from the Moon Gate which he saw when he was in his youth at the Penang Botanic Gardens. The outer side of the sculpture is smooth while the inner side has various undulating grooves.
The Moongate is envisioned as a portal for exploring ideas of journeying and arriving, encouraging viewers of the sculpture to imagine the possibilities for Singapore's history.
In addition to its abstract purpose, Moongate also marks the spot for the SG50 Time Capsule, which stores 50 item clusters representing Singapore's diversity, values and aspirations. It was sealed on the 50th anniversary of Singapore's independence by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and will be opened in 2065, at Singapore's 100th Anniversary of Independence.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
