The New Downtown is as new urban district being developed by the Urban Redevelopment Authority. Launch by the Minster for National Development, Mr Lim Hng Kiang, at Raffles City on 20 August, 1996, it is being developed out of reclaimed land that was once the sea.
Marina Bay separates it from the existing
Central Business District, providing opportunity to create new waterfont space between the existing and new parts of the city. Occupying some 360 hectares, the New Downtown offers ample are to meet the business and financial demands of Singapore.
The New Downtown comprises four neighbourhoods namely Central,
Bayfront,
Marina South and
Straits View. These are under various phases of development. The URA estimates that the New Downtown development will add some 2.6 million sq m of prime office space to the city.
This influx of space in the New Downtown will help to keep office rental rates in check and prevent a lack of office space that will affect the economic growth of the country. The growth of office space is carefully planned to also prevent over supply.
In addition to office space, some 26,000 residential units are planned for the New Downtown area. These are mostly upscale in nature, in keeping with the high retail value of the land in the area. The upmarket properties of the New Downtown enjoys proximity to recreational sites around Marina Bay, with its waterfront and parks, which will form a new playground for the nation.
