Nicoll Highway is a major road in Singapore. It is regarded as the first highway to be built in the island nation. It starts today at the intersection with
Stamford Road,
Raffles Avenue and
Esplanade Drive in the southwest, and ends at the intersection with Sims Way, Mountbatten Road and
Guillemard Road.
Although called a "highway", it is intersected by
Middle Road. Among the exits from Nicoll Highway include those with Java Road,
Republic Avenue and Stadium Road. Nicoll Highway also forms an interchange with the
Kallang-Paya Lebar Expressway (KPE).
The history of Nicoll Highway goes back to pre-independence Singapore. It was first completed in August 1956, at that time, as a coastal road, with views of the sea. The highway was named after Sir John Fearns Nicoll, Governor of the Colony from 1952 to 1955. The highway crosses the Merdeka Bridge, which was also completed in 1956.
