Palmer Road, Singapore (27 July, 2017)
Palmer Road is a minor road in downtown
Singapore. It connects
Shenton Way to
Anson Road, from where the road continues as
Enggor Street.
Mistri Road forms a T-junction with it.
Palmer Road is a one-way road. Traffic enters at Shenton Way.
Palmer Road was named
1 in 1905 after Calcutta merchant John Palmer (1766-1836) who bought land in the area after the founding of Singapore. Palmer helped the Indian merchants establish themselves in the colony. Before being called Palmer Road, the road was known as Tanjong Malang. In the early days, it was just a path leading to the godowns off Anson Road. Further south of the present road was a fortification known as Fort Palmer. For that reason, Palmer Road was previously called Palmer Battery Road.
