Pickering Street is a street in downtown Singapore. It is quite short, covering a distance of approximately one city block, from the junction of China Street to the intersection of South Bridge Road, after which it is known as Upper Pickering Street. Coming out from the north side of Pickering Street are Synagogue Street and George Street.
Pickering Street was named in honour of William A. Pickering, the first Chinese Protector of Singapore. He arrived in Singapore in 1871, and held the distinction of being the first European official who was fluent in Chinese. Under William Pickering, the British colonial government set up the Chinese Protectorate to look after the interest of the Chinese immigrants.
Although William Pickering had passed away in 1907, his contribution was remembered when Macao Street and Upper Macao Street were renamed on 1 January, 1925, in his honour.
Take the North-South Line or the East-West Line of the Singapore MRT to the Raffles Place MRT Station. Walk west along Church Street until you arrive at Pickering Street.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
