Pulau Bukom, Singapore
Pulau Bukom (GPS: 1.23492, 103.76483) is one of the Southern Islands of Singapore. It is located to the southeast of Jurong Island and to the southwest of
Sentosa Island. It is about 5 km off shore from the coast of Singapore.
Pulau Bukom is presently about 1.45 sq km in size, but may continue to expand through land reclamation. Today the island, along with the neighbouring isles, is being used as an oil refinery by Shell. A view of the island shows a collection of cylindrical tanks. It has served the petroleum industry going back to 1891, when the Shell company began using it to store kerosene.
Due to the sensitive nature of the industry, Pulau Bukom is restricted from casual visitors. Within its vicinity are Pulau Bukom Kechil, Pulau Anak Bukom and Pulau Busing, both also developed for the petrochemical industries.
