Saunders Road is a minor road in
Newton, Singapore. It is within Postal District 9. The road is a one-way road with traffic flow from
Hullet Road to
Emerald Hill Road.
Saunders Road got its name in 1927
1. It was named after Charles James Saunders (1869-1941) who was District Judge (1908), Registrar of Companies and Official Assignee (1915) and Secretary for Chinese Affairs, Straits Settlements (1922). Saunders was well received by the local Chinese community due to his knowledge of Cantonese, Hokkien and Hakka, and served as Assistant Protector of the Chinese in the late 19th century. The road was name in his honour four years after he retired and returned to England.
