Singapore National Anthem

Singapore National Anthem is called Majulah Singapura, which means Onward Singapore. It was composed by Zubir Said, a Singaporean composer born in the Minangkabau highlands of Sumatra. The song was penned in 1958, and selected the following year as the country's national anthem when it gained self-government.

Majulah Singapura was made the national anthem when the island achieved full independence in 1965. The song is written in Malay, and by law may only be sung in its original Malay lyrics, even though it is also translated into Singapore's three other official languages, Mandarin, Tamil and English.

Here's the lyrics of Majulah Singapura:

Mari kita rakyat Singapura
Sama-sama menuju bahagia
Cita-cita kita yang mulia
Berjaya Singapura

Marilah kita bersatu
Dengan semangat yang baru
Semua kita berseru
Majulah Singapura
Majulah Singapura

Marilah kita bersatu
Dengan semangat yang baru
Semua kita berseru
Majulah Singapura
Majulah Singapura

Translation

Come fellow Singaporeans
Let's approach happiness together
Our noble aspirations
A successful Singapore

Let's unite
With a renewed spirit
Let's exclaim
Onward Singapore
Onward Singapore

Let's unite
With a renewed spirit
Let's exclaim
Onward Singapore
Onward Singapore
