Sri Manmatha Karuneshvarar Temple, Singapore (26 July 2017)
Sri Manmatha Karuneshvarar Temple (GPS: 1.3089, 103.866; Tamil: ஸ்ரீ மன்மத கருநேஸ்வரர் கோவில் ) is a Hindu temple in the Kampong Bugis subzone of Kallang, Singapore. The temple is often called the Kallang Gasworks Sivan Temple. It is located on Kallang Road, near the junction of Kallang Avenue. The temple is dedicated to the Hindu deity Shiva.
The Sri Manmatha Karuneshvarar Temple was established in the 19th century by workers of the Singapore Municipal Gasworks, which had its depot in the area. As the workers were mostly Tamils of the Hindu faith, they had needed a place of worship. The Government of the Straits Settlements provided them a plot of land on Kallang Road measuring 8,255 square feet (766.9 sq meter) for the construction of their temple. The land was on a 99-year leasehold tenure, given to four trustees, namely Soona Veloo Vendir, Nagalingam Kathiraysonm, Annamalai Mecppa Komarasamy and Veerapatra Mudaliar. So, a small shrine was erected here on 1 January, 1888, and it was rebuilt and expanded over time, to become the full-fledged Hindu temple that we see today.
Hello and thanks for reading this page. My name is Timothy and my hobby is in describing places so that I can share the information with the general public. My website has become the go to site for a lot of people including students, teachers, journalists, etc. whenever they seek information on places, particularly those in Malaysia and Singapore. I have been doing this since 5 January 2003, for over twenty years already. You can read about me at Discover Timothy. By now I have compiled information on thousands of places, mostly in Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore, and I continue to add more almost every day. My goal is to describe every street in every town in Malaysia and Singapore.
