St George's Church, Tanglin, Singapore
St George's Church (GPS: 1.30481, 103.81515) is an Anglican church, part of the Diocese of Singapore. It is a red-brick building located on Minden Road, off Harding Road in
Tanglin, Singapore. The present building dates to 1913.
St George's Church traces its history to the British military garrison stationed in Singapore in the late 1860s. Major C.H. Malan served as the first lay chaplain of the church, from 1868 to 1870. Under his leadership, the first church building of the St George's Church was built within the compound of the military installation. Major Malan was juggling between his duty as a military officer and that as a Victorian-era missionary. In 1871 the first full-time chaplain was appointed for the St George's Church, helping it establish organized ministry in the barracks.
In the early days, the St George's Church was used exclusively by the British troops. However when the British troops were withdrawn from Singapore, it took on a new role as a civilian church, and was admitted into the Anglican Diocese of Singapore.
