Stamford House Singapore (13 September, 2010)
Stamford House (GPS: 1.29405, 103.8508) is a historic building in downtown
Singapore. It is located at the junction of
Hill Street with
Stamford Road. It was designed in the Venetian Renaissance architectural style, by the firm of Swan and Maclaren, and was completed in 1904. The original owner of the building, Seth Paul, rented it to the retail company, Whiteaway Laidlaw & Co., and was used as a retail shop until 1910.
Stamford House was originally called Oranje Building. In addition to being an early shopping mall, the building served for many years as a hotel. The Raffles Hotel once rented the two top floors while Seth Paul's dauthter Theodora Van Hein also turned it into a hotel, the Oranje Hotel.
Stamford House only acquired its present name in 1963. It was purchased in 1984 by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, which put in place plans to preserve it as a heritage building. In the early 1990s, Stamford House underwent a S$13 million restoration. It reopened in December 2016 as
The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore.
