Stamford House (GPS: 1.29405, 103.8508) is a historic building in downtown Singapore. It is located at the junction of Hill Street with Stamford Road. It was designed in the Venetian Renaissance architectural style, by the firm of Swan and Maclaren, and was completed in 1904. The original owner of the building, Seth Paul, rented it to the retail company, Whiteaway Laidlaw & Co., and was used as a retail shop until 1910.
Stamford House was originally called Oranje Building. In addition to being an early shopping mall, the building served for many years as a hotel. The Raffles Hotel once rented the two top floors while Seth Paul's dauthter Theodora Van Hein also turned it into a hotel, the Oranje Hotel.
Stamford House only acquired its present name in 1963. It was purchased in 1984 by the Urban Redevelopment Authority, which put in place plans to preserve it as a heritage building. In the early 1990s, Stamford House underwent a S$13 million restoration. It reopened in December 2016 as The Capitol Kempinski Hotel Singapore.
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
