Tan Kim Seng Fountain, Singapore (28 July 2017)
Tan Kim Seng Fountain (GPS: 1.29112, 103.85418) is a beautiful Victorian-style fountain in
Esplanade Park in Singapore. Mr Tan Kim Seng is a
Malacca-born philanthropist who became one of the wealthiest merchants in Singapore during his time. Despite the name of the fountain, it was not built by him, but rather, it was built by the Singapore Town Council in recognition of Mr Tan's generous donation for the installation of the first waterworks in Singapore. The donation of S$13,000 was a princely sum at the time, 1857.
The Tan Kim Seng Fountain was unveiled in 1882. Its original location was at Fullerton Square, but it was moved to
Battery Road in 1905, before settling down right here, at Esplanade Park, in 1925, where it stays to this day.
