Tan Tye Place is lined with warehouses as it is one of the roads leading towards the northern bank of the Singapore River. These warehouses have since been readapted into a food and beverage precinct. On the west side of Tan Tye Place is Canninghill Piers (presently under construction as of Feb 2023), replacing the previous development here, Liang Court.
Tan Tye Place was named after the landowner of the area. Tan Tye (1839-1898). Born in Fujian Province, China, Tan Tye arrived in Singapore in the 1860s1. He had a sawmill3 at this site. In addition to the lumber business, he was also into shipping, pineapple plantation, canning and real estate.
In addition to Tan Tye Place, also named after Tan Tye, but now expunged, is Tan Tye Alley. There is also a Tan Tye Creek that no longer exists. Tan Tye Place is known in Hokkien as Ong3kae1 Snua3kha1 Thik1long1 Pni3 Thau2 (Traditional Chinese: 王家山腳鐵廊邊頭, POJ: ông-ke soaⁿ-kha thih-lóng piⁿ thâu)
Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.
While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
