Tanah Merah MRT Station (26 July 2017)
Tanah Merah MRT Station
(GPS: 1.32725, 103.94662; EW4) is an above-ground station on the
East-West Line of the
Singapore MRT. The station opened on 4 November, 1989. It is located between the
Simei MRT Station (EW3) and
Bedok MRT Station (EW5).
The Tanah Merah MRT Station has two island platforms with a total of three tracks. This is an interchange station where the East-West Line forks, with one branch going to
Changi Airport.
The Tanah Merah MRT Station was initially not intended to open when the line went into operations in 1990. This is due to low population density in the surrounding neighbourhood. However, public pressure eventually forced the operator SMRT to operate the station. This is the case that repeated itself with the
Buangkok MRT Station a decade later.
