Temple Street is a street in the heart of Chinatown in Singapore. It runs in a single direction from New Bridge Road to South Bridge Road. The liveliest section is at the intersection with the pedestrianized Trengganu Street, which is lined with street stalls.
Temple Street was originally named Almeida Street, after Joaquim d'Almeida. He was the son of Macau-born Dr Sir José d'Almeida Carvalho E Silva (1784-1850), who owned a property at the intersection of Trengganu Street and Temple Street. It was renamed Temple Street in 1908, to avoid confusion with D'Almeida Street which is in the Financial District.
The new name honors the Sri Mariamman Temple, which is located at the junction of Temple Street and South Bridge Road.
