The Fullerton Waterboat House (28 July 2017)
The Fullerton Waterboat House (GPS: 1.2871, 103.85352) is a historic building in downtown Singapore. It is located at
Fullerton Road, between the
Anderson Bridge on one side and
Esplanade Bridge on the other. Today it serves as a harbourfront food & beverage centre housing two restaurants. 1919 Restaurant on Level 2 offers fine dining while The Rooftop is a casual place to enjoy the city sights. A Starbucks outlet operated on the ground floor, manned by staff from Autism Resource Centre, from 2014 until 2 February 2020, when its lease expired.
The Fullerton Waterboat House was originally called the Water House. That is because its purpose is to supply fresh water to ships in the Singapore Harbour. It was designed by the architectural firm of Swan & Maclaren in the Art Deco style, and was completed in 1919 (hence the name of the 1919 Restaurant). The Water House played its role in supplying ships with water until 1990, by which time its administration had been taken over by the Port of Singapore Authority.
Regarded as a heritage building, the Water House was gazetted for conservation in 2002. The Urban Redevelopment Authority opened it for tender, which was won by the Sino Group, which renovated the building. It opened in its present form, as The Fullerton Waterboat House.
