Singapore Yee Clan Association (7 July 2011)
Singapore Yee Clan Association (GPS: 1.27877, 103.8407) is a Chinese clan association in
Singapore. It is located on
Bukit Pasoh Road, in the
Chinatown subzone of
Outram planning area. The association occupies a two-storey terrace townhouse built in 1957.
The Yee Clan Association is a Cantonese clan association. Its members are clansmen from the Taishan, Xinhui, Kaiping and Enping subethnic clans of the Cantonese people. As with many clan associations, it was founded to look after fellow clansmen who were poor and less fortunate, to help them establish themselves in the Nanyang.
Originally called the Yee Clan Family Association, it renamed itself to Singapore Yee Clan Association in 1950. On 11 July 1954, the association formed a building committee to raise funds in order to purchase a property for its new premises, and the present building on Bukit Pasoh Road was bought from the Eu Tong Sen family on 19 November, 1954.
After seeing a drop in membership in the 1970s and 80s, the Singapore Yee Clan Association has since rebounded as there is a renewed interest in cultural and clan activities among Singaporeans. Today the association is one of the still active ones in Singapore.
