The uncooked siput remis (20 September 2014)
Siput Remis is a shellfish that is found on the sandy seashore all over Penang Island. Known in Penang Hokkien simply as si3put1

, it is a local delicacy enjoyed by most.
I remember digging for siput when I was small. Whenever my Dad took us for picnics in Tanjung Bungah, my mother would be digging siput, and soon we kids would join in. We would bring the siput home, and have them cooked with fermented soyabean paste.

My wife and I saw a seller at the Jelutong Market selling siput. We haven't eaten it for so many years, so we bought some from him. According to the seller, he dug it in Tanjung Bungah. He had two or three big tubs of siput. Asked how long did it take him to dig so much siput, he said two to three hours. He must be quite an expert at digging for siput, for if we were to do the job, we would never be able to dig so many siput in so short a time. He was selling the siput for RM2 per cup, and let us have three cups of siput for RM5.50. In the above photo, you see how the siput looks like.
And below, here's how the cooked siput remis look like. My wife made a spicy dish out of it. Ingredients include chilli, lemon grass, shallots and garlic.
