Incheon is the third largest city in Korea behind Seoul and Busan. (It is often counted as part of the Seoul metropolitan area, hence putting Daegu in third position). This bustling city has the largest international airport in the country as well as the largest seaport on the west coast of the country.

The growth of Incheon has be phenomenal. It was founded as recently as 1883, when its population was a mere 4,700. Yet today it is home to some 2.5 million people. Its close proximity to Seoul makes it part of the Seoul metropolitan area, yet it is governed under a separate jurisdiction.

As with many of the cities in South Korea, Incheon has been enjoying booming development in the past few decades. Today it is home to the tallest building in South Korea, the Northeast Asia Trade Tower.

Incheon is remembered in recent history as the site where General Douglas MacArthur directed an amphibious landing that helped the turn the tide in the Korean War.

By Plane from Overseas
The Incheon International Airport is the main international gateway to South Korea. To leave the airport, you can take the AREX Airport Express Train which is in fact the most economical way to travel. Take the AREX to the Gyeyang station. The journey takes 20 minutes and costs ₩2,600. From Gyeyang station, you connect to the Incheon Line 1.

By Subway from Seoul
The Seoul Metropolitan Line 1 (dark blue line) goes all the way to Incheon. This is a different "Line 1" from the Incheon Line 1 which goes from Gyeyang station.

Travel within Incheon

Incheon Rapid Transit Corp (IRT) presently has only one subway line, the aforementioned 29.5-km Line 1 from Gyeyang station (Station I110) to the International Business District station (I138). Except for the Gyeyang station, the rest of the stations are all underground. Lines 2 and 3 are presently in the planning stage, and will not be ready (as at time of writing Apr 2010) in the immediate future. For sights not on the subway route, you will have to depend on public feeder buses.
