I made a visit to Spices Hotel on 4 August 2015, and was warmly greeted by Michael Ong. Michael is one of the business partners and owner of the premises. It feels like visiting his own home, for as soon as I entered, I had to remove my shoes and put them away in the shoe rack.

Rather than squeezing a room out of every inch of space, Spices Hotel offers just 8 rooms, each named after a different spice such as turmeric, star anise and so on. Each is spaciously furnished. In addition, some 60% of the hotel is common area, so there are many cosy corners for the guests to feel right at home, cocooned from the hustle and bustle of George Town.

Located at Lumut Lane, Spices Hotel is a mere stone's throw from Acheen Street and Armenian Street, where the guests can explore the many heritage sites of the city.

There is a big banyan tree growing out of the centre of the house. According to Michael, it was upon seeing the tree and how homey it feels to have it there, that persuaded him to eventually pick up the place - originally with the intention of making it his own home, but as things turn out, he decided to convert it into a boutique hotel.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
