Dakkhina Stupa is a seemingly deserted pile of bricks located on the left side of Mihindu Mawath, the road leading towards the Sri Maha Bodhi tree. The Dakkhina Stupa is also called Dakkhina Thupa or Southern Dagoba. The Dakkhina Stupa was built over the cremated ashes of King Dutugemunu.

The Dakkhina stupa is the central building of an ancient monastery that was build in the 2nd century BC. Dutugemunu is the Lankan king credited with driving away South Indian Tamil invaders in several fierce battles. The king who is a devout Buddhist, built many fine monuments that have withstood the elements and age including the Dakkhina Stupa.
