Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall, Colombo, Sri Lanka (3 September, 2005)
Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (GPS: 6.90168, 79.87337), or simply
BMICH for short, is multipurpose conference building in Colombo. It is located on 37 acres of land, and consists of four main buildings, the main one being an octagonal structure which contains the Assembly Hall and the bust of S. W. R. D. Bandaranaike, the assassinated prime minister of Sri Lanka.
BMICH was a gift of the Republic of China (that is, Taiwan) and was built at a cost of UD$1.5 million in 1971. I toured it with members of AsiaExplorers when we were Colombo. I find the design a bit outdated - reminding me of the old Kuala Lumpur airport at Subang, but considering it was built in 1971, that explains.
