My wife and I had the honour of experiencing the hospitality of Lexis Suites Penang on 8-10 September, 2017. This is the second time that we are experiencing this resort hotel - the first time was immediately after it opened. This time around, we get to experience the hotel after it has time to settle down.

We arrived at the hotel at 6:30pm and were warmly received by Mr Ben Ho, the General Manager, and Mr Mark Trevor de Souza, the Director of Sales & Marketing. Checking in was swift. This time we were offered a corner unit of the Executive Pool Suite. It affords a splendid view of Teluk Kumbar, all the way to Gertak Sanggul. Standing on the balcony, which has its own private dipping pool, we could see the gentle curve of the bay lined with fishing boats.

This part of Penang Island is surrounded by green hills. As it was the raining season, the sky was covered with dark rain clouds, some of which seem to caress the top of the hills. It is nice to stand at the balcony, enjoying the breeze and keeping dry from the rain.

The Executive Pool Suite is incredibly spacious and the furnishing seems ultra modern. It has two king-size beds and a large, flatscreen television that is mounted right into the wall. There is a glass partition separating the bedroom from the bathroom, with curtain that can be drawn. The bathroom area has the toilet on one side and the shower and bathtub on a separate side. A door leads from here to the balcony, where the dipping pool and steam room are located. There is also a private deckchair for us to relax and enjoy the view.

Early next morning, we went down for breakfast at Roselle Coffee House, the main dining outlet at Lexis Suites Penang. We were warmly greeted by Miss Ayu, one of the staff members, and ushered to our table. The buffet is clustered around a food island, with more items spread along the sides. The service was excellent, and I have the chance to get to know the various people who attended to me, among them Razzuan, Soo, Firdaus, Noel, Hanzel and Candice. I also met up with the Food & Beverage Manager, Mr Eric Cheng, who has just joined Lexis Suites Penang, and Chef Lim Teng Kooi, the Executive Chef.

After our meal, I had the chance to relax and enjoy the facilities of the hotel. We tried out the dipping pool as well as the steam room, and later on, we also went for a swim in its swimming pool. The hotel has a lot of other facilities, such as a gym, a games room and a karaoke room, among them.

For lunch, we went for a drive to Balik Pulau, and had a meal of Hakka cuisine. We then stopped for sweet beancurd dessert, which is a stall parked at the Balik Pulau Car Park. When we were there, we saw the arrival of the famous Balik Pulau Brown Sugar Pao, and immediately lots of buyers were congregating around it. We did not buy any, as we were still full, and we were also preparing our stomach for what lies ahead.

And what lay ahead was the Shell Out Seafood Buffet dinner. This is an eat-all-you-want seafood buffet. We just need to pick what we want, and the restaurant will cook it for us with a selection of sauces, either creamy cheese, or spiced Szechuan, or black bean or garlic. I opted for spiced Szechuan while my wife tried the garlic. Diners were allowed to submit their orders as many times as they are able to eat, but we only managed one round each. Nevertheless, at just RM68nett per adult and RM40 nett per child/senior citizen, we felt that this is an absolutely good deal.

Lexis Suites Penang is one of those hotels which you can relax in your room without doing much of anything. Even the TV channels here are fantastic (I love BBC Earth, which I couldn't get in most of the other hotels), and of course, there's a dipping pool and steam room right outside the door.

The next morning, we once again had breakfast at Roselle Coffee House, but had to pace ourselves, to leave room for the buffet lunch at UMI Japanese Restaurant afterwards. We arrived at UMI rightn on time, and was ushered to our table by Sara. We met up once again with Mr Eric Cheng, Chef Lim Guan, the Japanese Chef and Chef Lim Teng Kooi, the Executive Chef. Lunch was a sumptuous affair, with all the freshest sushi and sashimi.

Three days and two nights passed swiftly, and soon our second round of staying at Lexis Suites Penang comes to its conclusion. We had such a nice time here. I want to convey a personal thank you to Mr Ben Ho, the General Manager, for giving us such a lovely weekend here, and also to the entire team, to the Director of Sales & Marketing Mr Mark Trevor de Souza, the Senior Finance Manager Mr Ng Soo Chuan, the Food & Beverage Manager Mr Eric Cheng, the Director of Operations Mr Suffian Phoong, the Outlet Manager Mr Hafizal, Chef Lim Teng Kooi, Chef Lim Guan, and all the rest of the team.

About this website

Dear visitor, thank you so much for reading this page. My name is Timothy Tye and my hobby is to find out about places, write about them and share the information with you on this website. I have been writing this site since 5 January 2003. Originally (from 2003 until 2009, the site was called AsiaExplorers. I changed the name to Penang Travel Tips in 2009, even though I describe more than just Penang but everywhere I go (I often need to tell people that "Penang Travel Tips" is not just information about Penang, but information written in Penang), especially places in Malaysia and Singapore, and in all the years since 2003, I have described over 20,000 places.

While I try my best to provide you information as accurate as I can get it to be, I do apologize for any errors and for outdated information which I am unaware. Nevertheless, I hope that what I have described here will be useful to you.
