Gat Lebuh Leith, George Town, Penang (26 February 2019)
Gat Lebuh Leith is a minor road in
George Town, Penang. It connects on one end to
Farquhar Street. A newly created road, Gat Lebuh Leith is named as the extension to
Leith Street, although the two roads do not meet. It was laid out to serve
Shorefront Residences condominium.
Gat Lebuh Leith has an earlier incarnation called Leith Street Ghaut, which had become obscure over time. Going back even earlier, to the late 18th century, there was an earlier path here that predates Leith Street Ghaut. That earlier path was known as Martina's Lane, named after the common-law wife of Captain Francis Light, but that road was long expunged when Gat Lebuh Leith was created.
The whole area from the end of
Light Street in the east to the present Eastern & Oriental Hotel in the west was once the property of
Captain Francis Light. He has his house, in which he lived with his common law wife Martina Rozells, on the land that is today the school field of
St Xavier's Institution.
