Jalan Cheah Seng Khim, Tanjung Bungah, Penang (15 February 2020)
Jalan Cheah Seng Khim is a minor road in
Tanjung Bungah, Penang. It connects with Jalan Tanjung Bungah in the north, and with
Jalan Sungai Kelian to the south. In between it forms junctions with Jalan Oldham, Jalan Nyiur Chabang, Jalan Pakawali and Jalan Warburton.
Cheah Seng Khim was a prominent politician in Penang in the 1950s. His father was Cheah Choo Yew (1841-1931) while his grandfather was Cheah Yam @ Cheah Hun Yam, who arrived in Penang in the 1750s, even prior to the founding of the Prince of Wales Island by Captain Francis Light, and had initially settled at Bagan Dalam on the Penang mainland. By the time Penang was established, Cheah Yam has already become a prominent merchant, and he relocated to Penang Island.
Cheah Yam's son, along with other prominent members of the Cheah clan founded the Cheah Kongsi (officially the Cheah Kay Sek Tong Seah Hock Haw Kong Kongsi) in 1858, and with 12,367 Spanish dollars, built the ancestral temple which was completed in 1873.
