Jalan Zainal Abidin, George Town, Penang (6 January 2020)


Jalan Zainal Abidin, formerly known as Yahudi Road (Chinese, now: 再那阿比汀路, formerly: 爪夷路), is a minor road in George Town, Penang. It runs from Macalister Road to Burmah Road, and is parallel to Madras Lane and Lorong Selamat. It got its name from the Jewish presence in the area, a reminder of which being the Jewish Cemetery along the road.

Yahudi Road was renamed Jalan Zainal Abidin, after a Malay intellectual who originated from Negeri Sembilan. In late 2015, there were rumours that the road may be returned to its original name, in order to seek UNESCO recognition for Penang being one of the first places of settlement of the Jews in Southeast Asia.¹ However, nothing came out of it.

Getting there

There are no public transport to Jalan Zainal Abidin, but you can take Rapid Penang Bus 10, 101, 104 and 304 to Macalister Road or 10, 11, 101, 103, 104, 201, 202, 203, 204, 206 and 304 to Burmah Road.
