Sungai Air Putih, Penang (9 September 2012)
Sungai Air Putih is a tributary to
Sungai Air Itam. Its source is at the foot of
Penang Hill behind
Hye Keat Estate. It flows under
Jalan Khoo Hye Keat heading east, then cross under
Jalan Air Itam at
Masjid Jamek Al Qadrie before emptying into Sungai Air Itam at
Kampung Melayu. There is also a
Sungai Air Putih in Balik Pulau, but it has no connection with this river.
The name Sungai Air Putih translates literally as "white water river". The name does not mean white foam on the water, but rather describes the clearness of its water, in comparison with the often murky Sungai Air Itam.
Getting there
Sungai Air Putih is easily viewed from Jalan Air Itam. The nearest bus stop along that road is served by
Rapid Penang bus
201 and
502.
