Sungai Bayan Lepas, Penang (15 December 2018)
Sungai Bayan Lepas is a river that flows through the
Bayan Lepas area, on the southeastern part of Penang Island. It is often taken for
Sungai Tiram, though in fact Sungai Tiram discharges to the sea at the different area.
Sungai Bayan Lepas was important for it helped the early settlements of Bayan Lepas establish
itself. Even today, the river is still lined by Malay village houses. The river has its source in the hills above the Mutiara Perdana development. From there, it cascades down to the
Bayan Lepas Waterfall, an area that has been beautified for recreational purposes.
From the waterfall, Sungai Bayan Lepas flows behind the Bayan Lepas town. It passes under the Bayan Lepas Main Road and then runs roughly parallel with Jalan Kolam Ikan. Near the outer fencing of the
Penang International Airport, it makes a bend towards the southwest, and continues on this course until it reaches the sea at
Permatang Damar Laut.
